When is the Right Time to Retire?

I have always wanted to retire at 30, travel the world, meet fascinating people, and soak in the beauty of breathtaking destinations. Imagine waking up to the sound of waves in Bali, stretching out on a sun-kissed beach, knowing that your biggest decision of the day is whether to order a coconut or a piña colada. Picture yourself strolling through the cobbled streets of Florence, losing track of time in an art gallery, or catching a sunset from a rooftop in Santorini, all while your friends back home are stuck in never-ending Zoom meetings. That’s the dream!

But is it even possible? Can someone really bow out of the workforce early and live a life of adventure, or is this just a fantasy sold by social media influencers who conveniently forget to mention their trust funds?

Retirement Dreams: Fantasy vs. Reality

"Retirement isn't about age; it's about financial independence," says James Wekesa, a financial planner with over 20 years of experience. "If you can generate passive income that covers your lifestyle at 30, then congratulations, you’ve retired early. If not, you need a plan."

The truth is, most people think of retirement as a one-time event, like a graduation party with less dancing and more pension paperwork. But retirement is not just about quitting your job; it's about securing a lifestyle that keeps you comfortable, healthy, and, most importantly, stress-free.

Take George Otieno, for example. He retired at 55, thinking he had enough savings. Three years later, he was back at work, realizing that inflation, unexpected medical bills, and bad investments had chewed through his nest egg. "I wish someone had told me to plan better. Retirement is not a vacation; it's another phase of life that needs structure and resources," he admits.

Then there’s Margaret Wanjiru, who retired at 60, started a thriving farm business, and now makes more money than she ever did in her corporate job. "The trick," she says, "is to retire TO something, not FROM something."

What Does the Government Say?

In Kenya, the official retirement age is 60 for most public servants, while in some countries, it’s even later. France recently raised its retirement age to 64, sparking national protests (clearly, not everyone wants to keep working). Meanwhile, in the U.S., you can start receiving Social Security benefits at 62, but for full benefits, you have to wait until 67. Some Scandinavian countries offer flexible retirement options, letting people retire earlier if they accept lower benefits.

But here's the real question: Should you let the government decide when you retire? Or should you take control of your future?

Lessons from the Pros (and the Not-So-Pros)

The secret to retiring well isn’t a magic number, it’s a strategy.

  1. Start Early – “Compound interest is your best friend,” says financial expert Miriam Kagwe. If you start investing in your 20s, you’ll have a much easier time than someone starting in their 40s.
  2. Don’t Just Save, Invest – A savings account alone won’t cut it. Smart investments in stocks, real estate, and businesses will give you financial security.
  3. Plan for Surprises – Medical emergencies, inflation, or unexpected family responsibilities can drain your funds. A diverse financial plan will keep you safe.
  4. Have a Purpose – The happiest retirees have hobbies, businesses, or projects that keep them engaged. Binge-watching Netflix all day won’t cut it.
  5. Know Your Magic Number – How much money do you need to retire? Financial experts say you should aim to replace 70-80% of your pre-retirement income to maintain your current lifestyle.
